photograph featuring two Japanese acoustic locators mounted on 4-wheel carriages, taken in the 1930s The Japanese war tuba is a colloquial name sometimes applied to Imperial Japanese Army acoustic locators due to their visual resemblance to the musical tuba. The name derived from a misidentification, probably in jest, of a historical photo from the 1930s featuring the Japanese emperor Hirohito inspecting the acoustic locators with anti-aircraft guns in the background.

Acoustic location

Acoustic location was used from mid-World War I to the early years of World War II for the passive detection of aircraft by picking up the noise of the engines. It was rendered obsolete before and during World War II by the introduction of radar, which was far more effective.

Many examples of acoustic location mirrors can still be found on the seacoast of Britain to this day.

St. Hedwig's to host symphony

The Toledo Symphony will launch its Medical Mutual of Ohio Neighborhood Concert Series at 3:30 p.m. Sept. 21 with a performance in historic St. Hedwig's Church, 2916 LaGrange St. Initiated by St. Hedwig's organist Shirley Czyzewski - a former Toledo Symphony staff member - the concert commemorates the 69th anniversary of the German Third Reich's invasion of Poland. St. Hedwig's was organized on Oct. 16, 1875, by the Toledo Polonia (Polish community), many of whose members had fled their homeland because of domination by German ruler Otto von Bismarck and Prussians in Poland. Resident conductor Chelsea Tipton II will lead an all-Polish program with music by Frederic Chopin and Henryk Gorecki. Toledo soprano Carol Dusdieker will be featured soloist in Gorecki's Symphony No. 3 "Symphony of Sorrowful Songs." Proceeds from the concert will go toward repairing the church's 101-year-old organ. Tickets are $10 at the church, which will open at 2 p.m. for listeners.

On Sunday November 30^th our band will be having a concert at Lourdes College, and we would like to invite bell choirs to join us. The music will be provided in advance and we would have a dress rehearsal on the Tuesday before.

Joyce was our band mom.

Joyce served this band for many years, and on Saturday Stan Czerminski told me, “she could make a gourmet meal out of anything.”

She cooked for us, she talked us through tough times, and she taught us many things.

Just having her around made things a little better, hopefully we don’t spoil in her absence.

Frances Joyce Folta

Frances Joyce Folta, age 71, of Toledo, passed away on Tuesday, September 2, 2008, in The Toledo Hospital. She was born on March 8, 1937 in Toledo to Stanley and Mary (Pokrywka) Gajewski. Formerly known as Sr. Mary Leonard, Joyce was a member of the Franciscan Community for 26 years, working as a teacher and administrator in schools throughout Ohio and Michigan. She was a longtime parishioner of St. John the Baptist Church where she taught in the Elementary School and was a member of the church's Altar Rosary Society. Joyce married the love of her life, Richard Folta on June 9, 1979. She loved Polish music and was a strong supporter and "Band Mom" of the Polish American Concert Band. She was also a member of the "Old Timers Breakfast Club" and personal secretary for her husband, a former Grand Knight and 4th Degree Honor Guard with the Knights of Columbus. An angel to her family and friends, Joyce always put the needs of others before her own. Proud to be called "Busia", she was devoted to her family, especially her grandchildren who were her favorite hobby, and her five furry granddogs. In addition to her loving husband, Richard, Joyce's survivors include her daughters, Sherrylynn (Victor "Skip") Taylor of Doylestown, PA and Susan (Keith) Snyder of Sylvania, OH; grandchildren, Sean, Stacey, and Christopher Taylor, and Danielle and Matthew Snyder; and brother, Leonard (Mary) Gajewski. Her parents, Stanley and Mary; brother, Daniel Gajewski; and sister, Sr. Mary Grace Gajewski preceded her in death. Family and friends may visit on Friday from 4-8 p.m. in the Sujkowski Funeral Home Northpointe, 114-128 East Alexis Rd., where members of the Knights of Columbus St. Lawrence Council will lead a rosary at 7 p.m. Funeral Services will begin on Saturday at 9:15 a.m. and continue with the Funeral Mass in St. John the Baptist Church at 10 a.m. Interment will follow in Mount Carmel Cemetery, Toledo. Great concert on Saturday – hopefully you are all recovered by now. The summer concert season is over and we are going to take a few weeks off.

When we start back on September 9^th we will play through some old war horses for a month, before starting into any concert music.

Also of note, we have been contacted by the Toledo Polish Genealogy Society to participate in a new book about Polish Toledo.

Something Special: Tuesdays

There are some special things about our band that we often take for granted. In the past year we have shared more time, stories, and food with each other than some families. We have shared the loss of loved ones, the excitement of new ones, and mostly we have shared ourselves. Time on earth is limited and the fact that we choose to share so much together is something special. Thank God for music, and thank you for your friendship and the joy you bring to Tuesdays.

Excellent Sound! Our blend, balance and tone were the best of the year. We were very focused and have much to be proud of. The crowd was entertained and we all seemed to have a good time. The PAC Band will play from 12:00 - 12:30pm on July 4, 2008 at the Point Place VFW as part of their flag raising ceremony.

The band will play the Armed Forces Salute, God Bless America, American Patrol, Men of Ohio March, and The Washington Post

Howard R. Bogdanski

BOGDANSKI Howard R. Howard R. Bogdanski of the Point and Shoreland Community, died on Sunday, June 22, 2008, in his residence at the age of 76. Howard worked for COSCO Graphics for 43 years, retiring in 1993. He graduated from Central Catholic High School in 1950 where his love of music started. Howard was a member of the former Ambassador Baton and Drum Corp and played in the P.A.C. Band for 50 years. On any Sunday Howard could be found at 12 o'clock sharp ushering where he was a member at St. John's the Baptist Catholic Church. Having served honorably, as a proud veteran of the United States Army during the Korean War, he was also a member of the V.F.W. post 3265. Howard also enjoyed crossword puzzles, the Detroit Tigers, and Notre Dame Football as well. Howard's love for the outdoors showed in his enjoyment of gardening and attending to his yard. Howard was preceded in death by parents, Richard G. and Anna F. (Cialkowski) Bogdanski; as well as his brother; Robert. Left to cherish his memory are loving wife of 51 years, Rose Ann; son, Bruce Bogdanski and daughters, Luann Bogdanski and Diane (Daryl Lukas) Jones; grand-children, Delaney and Alex and sister, Gloria Emerson. Family will receive visitors in the David R. Jasin Funeral Home, 5300 N. Summit St. (419-726-1583) on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 from 2-8 p.m. with V.F.W. services at 7 p.m. Prayers will begin in the funeral home Thursday, June 26, 2008 at 9:30 a.m. and will proceed to St. John the Baptist Catholic Church were services will begin at 10 a.m. Interment is at Calvary Cemetery. Our dear friend and fellow band member Howard Bogdanski passed away yesterday, Sunday June 22, 2008. Howard was a past president, the official historian, and a dedicated member of our percussion section. His stories, jokes and most of all his friendship will be greatly missed.
